Abstract

|
Chronic ulcerative colitis is one of the extremely rare diseases in Korea. Only one case was treated surgically and diagnosis was confirmed in Yonsei Medical Center during the last 10 years.
This is the 2nd case of chronic ulcerative colitis associated with carcinoma that treated with us.
The patient had relatively short history and no pseudopolyps formation. Also lymphatic or hematogenous metastasis was negative in spite of presence of direct invasion to the small intestine, which was resected together with colon associated with carcinoma.
Many theories and statistics were reviewed about the problem of the carcinomatous change of chronic ulcerative colitis; but in this case, it is considered as an incidental occurrence of two diseases rather than a carcinomatous change.
The relationship of careinoma to chronic ulcerative colitis is not yet fully elucidated. Many authors think that the concurrence of the two diseases is fortuitous.
